Castle the Winner in a Morgan Park Thriller
Lee Castle in the Wilson Brothers Racing Subaru WRX Sti came out victorious from the opening encounter of the third round of the Australian Manufacturers Championship at Morgan Park Raceway today, despite controversial contact on the last corner of the race.
Castle made a cracking start from grid position two to jump ahead of the competition on the run into the first corner, and managed to keep ahead of championship nemesis Rod Salmon aboard an EVO 10 Lancer for the duration.
The pair sprinted away from the field, with the Subaru WRX Sti showing brilliant form to hold out the fast finishing Salmon, before Castle was hit from behind at the last corner of the race.
The hit nearly sent Castle into the tyre barrier, however he was able to regain the situation and hold on for the win.
The race was the first ever Australian Manufacturers Championship event at Morgan Park Raceway, with Castle’s fastest lap now standing as the lap record, alongside the track record he set last year at Phillip Island.
For Castle, the win has set the agenda for the remaining races in the championship chase.
“All in all it wasn’t a bad day at the office,” said Castle.
“It’s a shame that the car is fairly heavily damaged again, but it won’t be a problem for the rest of the weekend.
“We’re in good shape for tomorrow, with a few more set up changes from what we have learned today, we are really looking forward to starting form pole position.”
Team principal Cameron Wilson is pleased to see his Subaru WRX Sti wrap up another race win.
“To win at home in front of our fans and supporters is just fantastic,” said Wilson.
“Lee certainly had to work very hard for it out there today, and we are stoked by the lap times it did, he was one second quicker today than when he raced at the circuit last year on slick tyres.”
The Australian Manufacturers Championship continues tomorrow with two further races, including an 18 lap mini-enduro reverse grid race.
Wilson Brothers Racing has also been busy running a pair of Geminis in the support races, with Tracey Whale and Samantha Bennett both putting in strong performances.
Lee Castle and Wilson Brothers Racing would like to thank Gold Coast Indoor Hire Karts, Cure Cancer Australia, Castrol, Subaru Parts Australia, Mercury Motorsport, Ecutek, MRT Performance, Ingear Industries, Racer Industries, Harris Visual 3D and Deluxe Screen Printing for their continued support.
