Castle and Subaru Win Four in a Row

LEE CASTLE aboard the Wilson Brothers Racing Subaru WRX Sti won a thrilling opening encounter in the Australian Manufacturers Championship yesterday at Oran Park, coming from a lowly fifth position to take the victory in a grandstand finish.

After earlier qualifying in an impressive third position, Castle made a strong start until contact at turn two on the opening lap dropped him back to the fifth position.

From there, an action packed and incident filled encounter saw the Subaru carve past Steve Briffa’s HSV, as well as the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10s of Rod Salmon, Steve Glenney and Bob Pearson.

En-route to victory, Castle set a new personal best lap time around Oran Park with a 1:17.8 second lap.

The aggressive driving came at a cost however, with Castle relegated six grid positions for race number two as a result of an on-track incident.

The win sets up an intriguing two final heats for the weekend, with Castle now in the hot seat as the title chase comes down to wire.

“We certainly had an incident packed first race, but I really enjoyed it, and I hope the crowd got a thrill out of it,” said Castle.

“It was great to have a strong recovery against such tough opposition, it’s a shame about the penalty, but the points haul really makes the championship chase interesting.”

For Cameron Wilson, team principal of Wilson Brothers Racing, the win adds to the success that the team’s V8 Ute driver Kurt Wimmer had at the circuit late last year.

“We’re stoked to have started this weekend like we finished in the utes last year with a win,” said Wilson.

“Wilson Brothers Racing hold the fastest lap forever for both Ford and Holden V8 Utes around Oran Park, and we are really impressed with Lee’s times around here in the first race, that was the best day we have ever had with the Subaru WRX Sti.

“We really want to thank Gary’s Motorsport Tyres for their help with the Dunlop tyres this weekend, Subaru Parts for their support, and also Heisman Bilstein for their assistance with the car’s set up.”
