Strong Pairing for Subaru at Symmons

Wilson Brothers Racing is looking to continue its strong early season form at the second round of the Australian Manufacturers Championship at Symmons Plains in Tasmania this weekend, and to get the job done they have enlisted the driving talents of two former V8 Supercar drivers.

For the pair of one hour long mini-endurance races, Queenslander Kurt Wimmer will be joined behind the wheel of the team’s Subaru WRX Sti by local Tasmanian Sam Walter.

Wimmer needs no introduction to the team, having campaigned a Wilson Brothers Racing prepared Holden ute in the V8 Ute Series for the past two seasons, as well as running with the team at the Bathurst 12 Hour, where the crew scored a strong top-ten finish.

Walter on the other hand will be making his turbo charged four-wheel-drive debut, however his last production car race start at Symmons Plains in 2007 provided him with a victory.

Walter’s most recent outing onto a race circuit was in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar series on the streets of Homebush Bay in December last year, and before that the Bathurst 1000 in October.

For team principal Cameron Wilson, the ace driving combination and strong car speed from Bathurst bodes very well for a successful weekend.

“It’s very exciting having Kurt on board for the season in the Subaru, especially after a solid points haul at the opening round of the Championship at Bathurst, I think he will be a serious challenger for the championship this year,” Wilson said.

“Sam joining the team is a huge bonus, he has proven over the years to be a very talented driver, and his local knowledge will really work to our advantage.

“Kurt and Sam are a very similar build and height, so sharing the car won’t be an issue.

“The championship points this season rewards outright placings rather than class points as in the past, so it should start to play into the favour of the outright class cars once again.

“The Subaru WRX Sti has proven over the years to have great race pace over longer stints, and looking forward to the six-hour race at Eastern Creek, the season looks very promising.”

For Wimmer, Symmons Plains is a happy hunting ground, as last year in the V8 Utes he walked away from the venue with a race win.

“The car will be a rocket, at the Bathurst 12 Hour we were running in the top five all day, and the work done on to the cars since February will mean that it will be on the pace for the regular season,” Wimmer said.

“It’s a great thing to have Sam on board for Symmons Plains, he’s very experienced and his local knowledge will be very handy.

“I’m really looking forward to competing in the whole series this year, the Manufacturers Championship visits some very good circuits, and the new format with hour long races gives us plenty of track time.”

The last time the Wilson Brothers Racing Subaru WRX Sti visited the circuit with Lee Castle behind the wheel in 2008, the team took a clean sweep of the races, which mirrored the hour-long race format for this weekend.
