Wilson Brothers Looking to Fight Back at the Island

Wilson Brothers Racing is looking to bounce back strongly at Phillip Island this weekend at the third round of the Australian Manufacturers Championship.

To mark the occasion, the team’s Subaru WRX Sti has had a full mechanical birthday, and regular season driver for the 2010 season Kurt Wimmer will be joined by fellow Queenslander and Phillip Island lap record holder Lee Castle, reuniting after a successful run at this year’s Bathurst 12 Hour.

Last time out at Symmons Plains a bad batch of fuel hindered the team’s charge, but with two new power plants on board, a new drive train and suspension set, the crew is ready for the twin one-hour long races, as well as the upcoming Australian Six Hour at Eastern Creek Raceway on July 18.

For team principal Cameron Wilson, the short gap between rounds has presented a busy preparation for the team at their Gold Coast base.

“We are really pumped up to make amends at Phillip Island, the last time we raced there we were the fastest car, and since then we have done a lot of development work to the car, but at the same time the competition is much tougher,” Wilson said.

“My brother Benn has been flat out building a couple of engines, and we have had the best dyno results we have ever achieved, so hopefully that is reflected on such a high-speed circuit.

“We have found that the Lancer Evo 10s generally have better straight line speed than our WRX Sti, but we have better braking and cornering speed, so it is definitely an area where we have to concentrate on, hopefully we can give the competition a good run for their money.

“I’ve really got to thank John Desmond from Mercury Motorsport with their dyno work, they are absolute gurus, I’m sure we can do them proud.

“It’s great to have Kurt and Lee back together, they worked very well at Bathurst, and we should have some lightning pit stops once again for them in the races.

“Obviously the big picture at the moment is to ramp things up for the Australian Six Hour, our next round, and this will be a good test session because Phillip Island and Eastern Creek are quite similar in their characteristics.

“It’s important to bounce back from what happened at Symmons Plains with the engine dramas, but it’s been tracked back to a bad batch of locally acquired fuel, so we won’t be seeing that happen ever again.”

A single 20 minute qualifying session on Saturday precedes the pair of one-hour long races, with Class A cars like the Subaru WRX Sti having to change two tyres during a compulsory pit stop in each race.

Driver Quotes

Kurt Wimmer

“I’m very happy to have Lee back on board, obviously he went very well in the car the last time the team were at Phillip Island, and it will be good to bounce data off each other.

“I really like racing at the Island, it’s an awesome track, and with a competitive field like we have in the Australian Manufacturers Championship it is all the more enjoyable.

“Obviously the boys have done a massive job turning the car around between rounds, and I’m sure it’s going to be a rocket ship once again.”

Lee Castle

“It’s been a bit of a spell on the sidelines since Bathurst back in February, but the plan is to go away from Phillip Island with the lap record again.

“Phillip Island and Bathurst are my two favourite tracks, and Phillip Island is pretty special for me because it is the place where I had my first circuit race meeting.

“Weather wise it doesn’t matter if there’s horizontal sleet like the last time we were there, a bit of a wet track will probably work in our favour.”
