Fast Start and Fighting Finish For Wilson Brothers Racing
Wilson Brothers Racing driver Lee Castle finished a strong fourth outright in the opening race of the Oran Park round of the Australian Manufacturers Championship this afternoon.
Castle made a flying start from grid position five, passing two competitors by the time the field exited turn three on the opening lap.
However, pole sitter Andrew Miedecke snuck by at the final turn on the opening lap, and was followed shortly after by the similar Mitsubishi Evo of Trevor Symonds.
Garry Holt made a dive on Castle next in his BMW, but the Subaru fought back, surging past onto the bridge to commence a titanic battle that lasted the duration of the seven lap race.
Castle drove a smart race to hold out Holt for fourth position outright in the dying stages.
Earlier in the day, Castle qualified fifth fastest with a best lap time of 1:18.8748, despite being baulked on his flying lap.
Wilson Brothers Racing team principal Cameron Wilson was pleased with progress today.
“Lee did a great job today to finish ahead of the BMWs, especially Garry Holt after a cracker battle to the end,” said Wilson.
“The job now is to get on the ultimate pace of the top three Mitsubishis, and we have some things in mind that we will implement before the next round at Symmons Plains.”
Castle was also happy after a hard opening race.
“Overall it was a good day, and I really had to race hard to hold on to fourth position at the finish,” said Castle.
“Qualifying was a little up and down, and it is a shame that we are a little down on the horsepower of the top three Mitsubishis, but we will give them a hard time again tomorrow.”
Racing resumes tomorrow with a pair of 12 lap handicap races.
